Welcome to our website The Law, Explained! We’re here to provide simple explanations of how the law works in the United States.
We have divided our website into three main sections. In the first section, Legal Principles, we offer simple explanations of how the law generally works on certain topics. We don’t tell you exactly what the law is in your jurisdiction because there are too many jurisdictions in the United States for us to cover them all (and to complicate matters further, the law is changing all the time). If you want to know what the law actually is in your area at the current time, we encourage you to consult a licensed attorney in your area.
What we try to do, instead, is to give you a sense of the general contours of the law on a topic so that you can start to see what the issues are – what a judge would find relevant and what he would not be interested in hearing about. We also try to explain why judges find some issues more important than others. If you have a legal problem and consult an attorney, our explanations may help you put some of your attorney’s advice into context. In all cases, if anything we say here seems to differ from what your attorney tells you, you should ask your attorney for help in resolving the difference.
To help people understand the law, we provide brief articles, examples, and quizzes so that you can test your understanding of the material. In some areas we may also provide video tutorials. You are welcome to use these at your own pace. We suggest you will get the best benefit by starting at the beginning of a topic and working your way through it rather than leaping directly to the question that you’re most interested in. The law is a subject where background is important.
In the second section, Fact or Fiction?, we talk about some common beliefs about the law and see whether they’re true or not. We sometimes think of this section as legal mythbusting.
In the third section, Current Events, we deal with news that involves legal topics and provide links to other websites where commentators debate the issues.
We encourage you to use this website to increase your understanding of the law, and we hope you enjoy the learning process!
